Offering a specialized form of horseback-riding to people with physical
and/or developmental disabilities in Lanark County since 1986.

The History & Background of the Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program:

The Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program provides specialized riding lessons to children and adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities. The Riding Program is under the umbrella of Lanark Community Programs which in turn is sponsored by The North Lanark Community Health Centre. In 2009 we celebrated our 23d anniversary of offering this beneficial program to the residents of Lanark County and the Ottawa Valley. The program began in 1986 with just twelve young riders at one location. Over the years the program has grown and developed to include more than 135 riders taking lessons at four different locations in Lanark County.

Therapeutic riding emphasizes the learning of functional riding skills as a means of improving the physical and/or mental well-being of the participants. It encompasses disabilities categorized as orthopedic, neurological, and a broad range of others.

The riders who are involved in the Riding Program range in age from 2 to 73 years of age and have a wide variety of both physical and developmental disabilities including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down Syndrome, stroke, spinal cord injury, amputees, brain damage, blindness and hearing loss, learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, global developmental delay, autism and children who are at risk.

Hippotherapy is a passive form of riding where the rider reacts to the three-dimensional rhythmic movement of the horse. We have a consulting Physiotherapist who has her Level 11 training in Hippotherapy and volunteers for the program on a part time basis working one-on-one with the riders using the horse as a living physiotherapeutic tool.
