Dear Riders and Hikers,

The Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program is holding a fundraising RIDE-&-HIKE-A-THON on Saturday, October 1st, 2011. The event will run rain or shine so do a sundance! The event will begin at the same place as last year at the Jones' Farm off of Cedar Hill Road. There is a sturdy bridge and then a hill leading up to the house, please stop your truck before the bridge and wait until the bridge and hill are clear, go slowly over the bridge, then pick up speed after the bridge and you won’t have any problem. There is a large parking area behind the house where we will be setting up the barbeque etc. You may also park in the field to the right as soon as you turn in the laneway if you don’t want to drive up the hill.

Cross country runners and hikers at 10:30 am they will have a choice of following a 1 km, 3 km, 6 km or 17 km trail between 10:30 and 11:30. Hikers and runners are asked to bring a minimum of $10 in pledges.

Riders who participate in the trail ride in the afternoon will begin to depart at 12:00 noon on a 17 km trail which should take approximately 2 &1/2 to 3 hours. All riders out on the trail by 2:00 pm please. No dogs on the trail please. Riders will leave in small groups in intervals so as not to crowd the trail. All participants must sign a waiver form and all riders for the trail ride must have proof of liability insurance. You may register on-line at www.therapeuticriding.ca or mail in your registration or confirm your participation by calling :
Lanark Community Programs at 1-800-667-2617 or 257-7121, ext. #236,
or, JoAnn Donaldson, 256-3477, R.R. # 4, Almonte, Ontario, K0A-1A0

Please bring all your pledges and waiver form with you the day of the Hike-&-Ride-Thon.

There will be prizes for the top five people who collect the most pledges. Tax receipts will be mailed to donors who pledge more than $10.00. There will also be draw prizes for participants. Refreshments and a barbecue will be provided on the grounds.

All proceeds from this event will go towards the Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program.

The Therapeutic Riding Program offers specialized riding lessons to physically and developmentally handicapped children and adults in Lanark County. The program began in 1986 with just 12 riders in one location, now the lessons are taught from three different locations in the County. The Program runs from April to November and there are over 135 children and adults that take part in the program. Many benefits are achieved through therapeutic riding; the movement of the horse is transferred in to the passive rider who sits astride these gentle giants and relaxes spastic muscles, stimulates balance and coordination reflexes and helps to develop muscle tone and joint flexibility. Emotionally, the riders experience a sense of confidence and accomplishment as four strong legs replace their own and they learn how to manoeuvre the horses through obstacle courses, games and the different gaits. Your participation in the Ride-&-Hike-a-Thon will help to support this worthwhile program as they rely on fundraised dollars and a terrific team of volunteers to make the program run.
